7/24/11 At the stroke of midnight, Kitty Lambert and Cheryle Rudd were joyously married at Niagra Falls. Hundreds of same-sex couples throughout the state tied the knot last night as gay marriage became legal in New York. On June 24th, the State Senate voted and Governor Andrew Cuomo signed marriage equality into law. The measure did not take effect until today. New York is now the sixth and by far the largest state, along with the District of Columbia to legalize gay marriage. With polls trending strongly in favor of marriage equality, the euphoria felt today in New York will gradually sweep the nation. The fight is not over but the ultimate outcome is no longer in doubt.
